Picked this little under-powered toy over the weekend. ;D ;D 1979 XR500 The seat needs to be rebuilt. Mice got into it and built themselves a nest in the airbox. Had a lot more power once that was cleaned out. Original owner's manual was in a ziploc bag in the tool bag. Tucked into the lineup... One oddball rectangular light!

Cool bike looks like everything is there for a great starting place.... Looks like the mice have added another layer of filtration are you going to try and street it?

I feel like such a proud enabler... ;D

I'm a bit undecided which direction I'm going with it... Either way it's DEFINITELY Tim's fault...

I've been naughty again... GS500 wheels, axle diameters match to the XR500. Just need to get calipers & master cylinders sorted. The front wheel is already drilled & tapped from the factory for dual disc. Chain pitches match also! Like it was meant to be... Ordained by the gods in the creepy black vans in the sky Positive proof of concept... A minor interference that will have to be rectified. This lug mates to the original front hub and secures the drum brake.

so this was an original front drum brake bike? are you keeping the drum or going to disc? Originally front and rear drums. I've put new shoes in the front and they're still scarily ineffective. Going to be running disc brakes front and back with the GS wheels. That lug on the front fork will probably be cut off and a couple of holes drilled/tapped so I can re-mount it with bolts later on to go back to stock if needed. I'm thinking also that bolt holes there will be useful for mounting a bracket for the front caliper. I was hoping to be able to ride it on the street with the full knobby setup at least a couple of times but given the lack of braking power I'm not going to risk that. Pushing ahead with the SM conversion to get her in action ASAP and then I'll sort the dirt stuff out. I need to then source a front wheel (21") for using in the dirt with a disc brake. I can accept the rear being drum with the stock 18" wheel when offroading if I have solid front brakes.

You might be in luck grasshopper, I'm planning on switching the front wheel on the KLR to an 2.5 x 18, which means that the original 21 incher will be sitting around gathering dust. Don't know if the axle size will fit your Honda, though.
