Wonder how the term 'ton' developed? A ton is 2,000 lbs, which has only loose numerical ties to 100 mph. Perhaps because ton looks like '100' in dim light with eyes crossed? Guess I can Google that.

In Britain, a ton is colloquially used to refer to 100 of a given unit. Ton can thus refer to a speed of 100 miles per hour, and is prefixed by an indefinite article, e.g. "Lee was doing a ton down the motorway"; to money e.g. "How much did you pay for that?" "A ton" (£100); to 100 points in a game e.g. "Eric just threw a ton in our darts game" (in some games, e.g. cricket, more commonly called a century); or to a hundred of pretty much anything else.

Now I know 2 British words with slightly different meaning. The first and foremost being "pint", where a British pint has 20 oz vs our 16 oz pint. And the only reason that comes in handy is when I'm comparing fuel mileage of cars and motorcycles from British reviews when they use miles per Imperial gallon.
