Sold my Triumph Tiger on monday night, so I'm now able and anxious to join the ranks with a project. In researching potential builds, I kept coming back to the BMW airheads made in the 70's and 80's, and this BMW R80 cafe caught my eye: This morning, I was looking at the BMWMOA classifieds and ran across this clean '86 R80RT in NC: Road trip time! Sent the owner a deposit check. I suppose I'm fearless considering my lack of mechanical ability and rudimentary knowledge. I'll likely wait until this coming winter to start the project. This will allow time to get my proverbial ducks in a row, and enjoy the old BMW tourer over the summer. Hope you guys are ready for dumb questions.

That rocks! But if you hang around with us very much you won't be able to wait that long to start messing with it!
And stupid questions are what Sunday coffee time is for. After chatting with the guys last sunday i came home and fixed my KZ with an idea i got from them.
Keep us posted!

Glad to see someone joining the ranks of us European riders. Lots of stuff available for the airhead motors. I will try to get mike to chat with you about things to do - look out for. He is a long time BMW owner. I hate starting with a bike that looks so good as it is. Looking forward to some "chat" time.

Just ditch that fairing first thing and it will help a lot.

Also........the BMWMOA is a great organization to belong to/participate in, in my opinion. Yeah, I'm a member, but haven't been involved locally, have an R12RT hexhead. uhhhh Tim, Triumph tiger IS euro too Triumph does have a 'Hinckley East' factory in Thailand. I think there's a way to tell based on the VIN, but I think I don't want to know. I hate starting with a bike that looks so good as it is. Looking forward to some "chat" time. Yeah, I'll feel bad using that bike for the project.... NOT!!! Just figured I'd be money ahead buying a solid bike, as the delta between the nice ones and tired ones wasn't bad compared to the cost of repairing an unexpected surprise. My iPad is getting full with inspur raytions !!!!!!

I should've assumed you were a BMW owner, either currently or prior. I've yet to meet anyone that's gone the airhead cafe route without first being a Beemerphile.
