Your right on wanting to start with a good base, read an article from a guy that restores bikes and he stated start with the best base you can afford that way most everything with be on the bike and in working condition.

Well if they build bikes that are a combo of a Thai tiger and a Thai fighter with a little Thai pepper mixed in.... I'll take 2!
Actually Jack, looking at your bike i don't think we need to check the VIN...

The R80RT was owned by a white haired man who only drove it on Sundays: Of course, I had to make sure it was road worthy: Negotiating. The white haired guy drove a hard bargain: Loaded on the trailer: On the road: Stayed up all night doing the conversion. She's a beaut !! If only it were that easy. Chuck

Wow that really is I nice looking bike.. It great picking up a new bike on a road trip like that.. hopefully your not like my buddy who was so excited he kept looking in his mirror at his new bike in the back of his truck that he ended up driving two hours north before he realize the sun didn't set in the East and he shoud have been going south.. but he still said it was worth the drive..good luck with your build.

I just set the Garmin for 'home' and followed the instructions! A trailer light did pop out of its housing on the way back, but we found an Autozone pretty easily for a replacement.
Spent part of the morning examining the bike, and seeing how to remove the fairing pieces. The headlight bracket also supports the fairing, so that is issue one. Issue two is that the fairing also houses the ignition. Issue three is the fairing mirrors. Issue four is front turn indicators. The solution is to order R80 headlight brackets, which also has a dedicated space for the ignition on the side. So I'll do a little more research to confirm this, and then order the parts. Since I intend to do bar end mirrors, I might as well start researching 22mm handlebars. Front turn indicators I'll ignore for the time being.
I was going to hold off and just ride the bike until winter, but I think I'll enjoy it more without the fairing.
The fairing, clock and voltmeter should bring good money on EBay.

I won't say "i told you so" but i was going to be very impressed if you could resist "making it your own" until winter. I've never had that kind of self control.
Let the FUN begin!!!
