My one venture in buying untitled, busted, broke back yard art.
It came complete with flat tires and the petcock selection lever installed upside down.
While cosmetically challenged it now is titled and running.
To get there we have replaced the gen. rotor, wiring harness, fixed the flat(one has held air once pumped up).
Tighten the rear sprocket, replaced the clutch push rod seal and bushing, rebuilt the master cylinder and cleaned the caliper. Another seat was added as the old only had a little of the vinyl left and the foam was dry rotted. A set of original rotortiller bars replaced the bent one. The incorrectly installed points brushes in a electric ignition system probably had a lot to do with why this bike was parked. Not many if any batteries can stand a 18 volt charge.
At first a loop around the yard would be all I felt safe doing. That expanded to trips to the gas station. Then a trip to Springfield. Yesterday I rode it almost 300 miles and am convinced it will make a decent bike.
Like I mentioned it is cosmetically challenged and most bits are kinda beat up. But if I replaced the working speedo and tach the styling I pick probably won't be what the new owner would want. Ditto the tires, etc.
As of now I believe the carbs need to be revisited(idle climbs, a symptom of a lean condition) and not all of the electric things work(neutral light, high beam indicator).
This is a baseline bike. Ready for whatever build you would like. The lean clean look of a bobber? The longer look of a chopper. Flat track or café the XS650's beautiful twin motor highlights any platform.
The XS ISN'T a bike for everyone. It does require maintenance. Hands on care and a dose of common sense goes a long way towards making them reliable. Reliable? How reliable you ask. Well like I said I rode this turd almost 300 miles yesterday and wasn't worried about getting home. A sister XS that I have owned for 5 years took me 2300 miles over Memorial Day. A long loop to the Texas hill country( I did 3 twisted sisters) as far south as Del Rio. Then back through parts of Louisiana and up 7 in Arkansas. And NEVER wondered if I would make it home. Please take time to visit one of the sites that support the XS650 if you aren't familiar.
You can find info at XS650.com, the XS 650 garage, or Yamaha XS650 Forum.
Anyway if you might be interested in a titled project bike with solid known components. But that will require MORE work.
Or if you are looking for an everyday rider that won't make you cring when you catch some road trash. Save the pretty bike for weekends!
I would be glad to show you this bike.
I can e-mail pics if you would like.
As always a possible purchase should be evaluated from your perspective.
Thanks for looking at my ad.

I haven't advertised this on Craigslist yet.
I would rather it went to someone who is already riding.
