Sorry I missed you guys, but work followed me home tonight. I tried to slam the front door on it, but it still seeped in. Insidious it is. Mulling a quick run through the slow twisties close to town Saturday, if the weather permits. Cody and Tim jolted my memories of some of the roads I used to haunt as a kid, and I can probably show off a few that remain undiscovered. All 2nd and 3rd gear stuff, but still fun. Now back in the day when they were still gravel and I could hang the rear end of my Audi 4000 out as I imitated a rally driver, that was probably more fun. But I'm older and much more responsible now... At least until I get that dirt tracker built. ;D

Audi 4000!!!!! LUCKY!!! I cut my rallying teeth in the bootheel with a Chevette. Swamp East as my Dad, a former Sikestonite, used to say. My first car, currently sitting in a Friend's Quonset hut awaiting restoration, was a '63 Corvair Monza convertible with the 2 speed power glide. Quite the fun car on gravel with the pendulum effect. Unsafe at any speed in the hands of a 16 year old. My sister had an old Audi with the 5 cylinder.

brad: I had delusions that it was a Quattro, when in reality it was a gussied up fwd VW Jetta. Man, I thrashed that thing within an inch of it's life. But I actually learned to slip and slide with a '64 Bug I bought at 13 with my life savings from hauling hay. I terrorized quite a few cattle until I got the nerve to sneak onto the roads. @zoom: A cattle rancher that I worked for as a kid had a Corvair. Even then I wondered about the wisdom of a gasoline fired heater under the dash. I don't know if that was a factory option, or something he cobbled together. A neighbor chopped one into a rail buggy. Tail heavy + cutting brakes + gravel roads = "interesting" handling dynamics.

Most people think Nader killed the 'Vair, but I think it was that Ford they started making in 1964 1/2, under the tutelage of that Iococca dude.

My high school days had me running around with Gary in his Corvair Spyder convertible. 1964. 180 HP. Still wouldn't turn. How did this conversation get from a starbucks cruise-in to Ralph Nadar? Never a dull moment around here.

brad: You're in good company, I'm sure that I read that Sébastien Loeb started his World Rally career bombing around the back roads of Alsace, France in a Chevette ;D (Road & Track magazine once called it the most "abuser friendly" car that Chevrolet ever built). @tim: Yep, we're an eclectic crew around here. I'm sure that's why you fit in so well amigo. :-)
